All right, I have read many places that the drop rate has reduced and there are less +1s or DBs or whatever dropping. I hear these kind of things all the time and never know if they are true or not. So, I want to do a little test, actually a long, time-consuming test, to get an idea on drop rate in one of the more common hunting areas, the Elf Apes. My plan is to kill 250,000 of these critters and keep tabs on what drops by the 1000.

I will post my first 25000 now, with totals for the whole thing and totals for each individual 1000. I hope this will help settle some questions on the drop rates and make me rich at the same time.

Anyway, here it is, unis and refs aren't specified unless they would be considered valuable <ex, a uni no sock hammer will be listed as just a uni whereas a uni 2sock club would be listed by name. > I will list all elite and better by name, no matter what.

here's how u can do it... make a time table. every 1/2 hour or 1 hour go kill 1K monster and record... that would be a much better experiment to do.

Drop rates and minning are very simmilar, but as any long-time player will tell you it gets down to patience and time.

minning is something that works on an algorythm system, just like all 'random' events on a computer. There are things that effect it and that is why it can be generally relied upon.

The best time to item hunt mine, or add sockets, is durring low volume server periods. Less people with an item on the server = a better chance for you! That is the same reason that server starts have thos very lucky players who get great starts on everything. Also is has been suggested that the drop rates are increased at a server's start to get the economey going.

Minning is also random, and there are many sugestions on how this may be improved, but it seems the fewer people minning the better your chances are. After server maint or durring GW is a great time to get things going. Adding + to your pickaxe or sockes to it may not achually help any, its a matter of opponion if this efects anything besides durrabulity of a pic. The longer you sit in one place the better your gem chances are. Tip: dont mine next to a wall, the gem 'pull' when minning over a long time can allow you to find gems from ajasent cords. Gem quality seems determined seperately from the location a gem can be found.

I achually think that as a players lvl increase there chances for gems improve, however it IS a better chance in the desert and ape city mines. Those higher lvl mines are less frequented and so generally have more un-tapped gems.

i've only found 1 db my entire time on co, and you found 2 in 18,000 elf ape kills?! nice. -.-

but damn... 10 +1's out of 25,000 kills.. ouch. everyone's +1 pickup rate is different. i don't know how they figure it up, but +1 is only determined by the first person who picks up an item dropped from the mob, rather than quality of item which is determined at drop. i have horrible +1 luck on my tao, which is why i've stopped hunting on him. i've been using my archer regularly hunting in a little 'secret' spot me and my buddies go to, i pull mets out of that spawn like nothing else with archer, no +1's yet though, and he still hasn't found his first db. although it took months for my tao to find his first super item (super 120 warrior helmet-gave away to friend), my archer found a super 2 days ago (super lvl 15 sword w/no soc-sold for 12m worth of items + 5m gold).

i like your experiment, you're very patient and i hope it pays off well for you. good luck ^^!

p.s. mining sucks >.>; i've tried that stay-in-one-spot method until ores stop coming and then hours upon hours later, nothing. i've been more lucky actually moving to a new spot, because there has been several occasions where i get angry because a blackname comes, or a dumb miner who thinks he can beat me to death with his pickaxe, and i move to kill them and then within about 15-20 minutes of re-starting the process i'd get a gem. so now i only stay in a spot about 30 minutes or so and hobble along to a new one, but it hasn't helped lately, i've all but given up on mining now. if it were legal to run 3 clients, then and only then will i mine regularly again, because it takes too much away with a 24/7 market char and training my tao / hunting on archer for new stuff to sell & mets to upgrade ... opening 3 clients would be so helpful

Nice results so far Lacam and more stuff than i'd have imagined you would find from that quantity of kills. I 'll try to start a similar record at different mobs and see how it compares. Out of interest, how long was it taking you to clock up 1000 kills on average?

i usually stop with hunting before i reach any high number of kills there, and always take a few low lvls with me there, then when ive leveled them to the level where they no longer get good exp i stop.

and yeah i think its correct the part of servers at start up, the monsters drop quality items more often

It takes about 40 minutes to get 1k, but I am still double scattering for kills until next level. Then I think it will be around 35 minutes or so. As far as the DBs go, I actually got a third today levelling bow at macs. 3 in a week!

Also, I am not killing 25k at a time, rofl. I am killing in 1k increments and recording the results. Not the type for a 24 hour hunting marathon!

I appreciate the feedback and I plan on continuing this to completion. I think it will give a nice idea on drops and what can be reasonably expected. I might expand it to different times, but the server maintenance happens at 3am here, a little difficult to do that consistently.

Anyway, hopefully the next batch will be posted within a week or so

I am soon to be L90 at which point i will be using the following:

Elite L90 attack ring
Elite L90 bow 1 sock with ref drag


The rest doesn't really matter since def isn't an issue for elf apes.

im a lvl 42 archer all normal equipment for now and i hunted wind snakes for an hour and only got 2 mets and some normal items plus about 20k(alot for me) worth of moneys from them so is the drop rate higher for the higher lvl monsters or is it just u 2hit scatter the spawn of likie 10 monsters so ur kill alot more in less time because i never get any good drops ive given up on hunting until i get about lvl 90 where i can go to slow apes or elf apes and scatter them lvling

A question about your methodology:

I presume you are hunting at a spawn, but each time you hunt your 1k, is it the same spawn? Or are you taking whatever mac spawn is available?

ur lucky... i normally get nuthing much outta 4-5 hours of hunting... i hunt usually at hawkings or apes which might have a better dropping rate than other places...

I try to take the same Elf Ape spawn each time, it is usually open. If it isn't, I do the jump around method or take one of the more spread out spawns. But easily 80-90% of my data comes from a single spawn area.
